CANINE FLU

What is it? How can I protect my dog?

What is Canine Flu? Canine Influenza Virus (H3N8) has caused outbreaks in animal communities in 30 states including Georgia, Virginia, and has recently been seen in the northern North Carolina area.

The Signs:

• Coughing, sneezing, fever, nasal discharge, and ocular (eye) discharge. Even dogs that do not show symptoms can still spread the virus. This virus is very contagious in the dog communities.
• Dogs can unknowingly already be spreading the disease for 7 – 10 days without showing symptoms.

The Vaccine. WAH recommends:

• For dogs that socialize with other dogs in places such as veterinary clinics, boarding facilities, pet stores, breeding kennels, grooming shops, daycares, dog parks, and dog classes.
• Your dog should be at least 6 weeks old to receive the vaccine. The vaccine is done as a series to two booster vaccines three weeks apart the first time, and annually thereafter.
